About Indian Wells
Nestled between Palm Desert and La Quinta is Indian Wells, a city with a rich and colorful history. As early as the 1800s, Indian Wells was a thriving village inhabited by Cahuilla Indians who formed their village before gold was discovered on the Colorado River.
Indian Wells was opened up to the world by William D. "Bill" Bradshaw, a western pioneer and prospector who forged the Bradshaw Trail in 1862. The trail was from San Bernardino, California, to La Paz in New Mexico, giving the areas of California's west coast a direct route for prospectors to get to the Gold Rush fields. This famous trail also opened up Indian Wells to settlement and development.
Despite the risks and extreme weather, settlers arrived in the area, including the families of William Blair, Ernie Chapin Sr., Melvin Harmon, and James O'Neal, who opened "Dan's Market" and established the first Indian Wells post office.
Caleb Cook, who is credited with pioneering the valley's date industry, established the first sizable Deglet Noor garden and encouraged others to become successful date ranchers. By 1922, Indian Wells was noted as undergoing rapid and substantial improvement.
In the 1950s, Milt Hicks and Desi Arnaz began building the Indian Wells Country Club and Golf Course, and in the late 1950s, Arnaz opened the Indian Wells Hotel. Indian Wells was incorporated in 1967 and has continued to preserve its residents' independence and vision from other cities that wanted to control it.
Despite facing financial challenges due to an economic downturn, it turned things around and built up $8 million in general fund reserves by the fiscal year 1995-1996. This turnaround impressed Palm Springs Life magazine, which noted that Indian Wells residents were some of the nation's most affluent people with responsible city management. A few years later, the city emerged to be with the highest national income, with a median household income of $120,680.
